Agglutination activity is expressed in µg/ml and is determined from serial dilutions of a 1 mg/ml solution using phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.0. This activity is the lowest concentration to agglutinate a 2% suspension of neuraminidase treated human blood group A erythrocytes after one hr incubation at 25 °C.
Biochem/physiol Actions
PA-I has a major affinity for D-galactose and its derivatives. PA-I agglutinates all types of human and animal erythrocytes and interacts also with unicellular protozoa, algae and bacteria. PA-I induces mitogenic stimulation in cultured human lymphocytes pretreated with neuraminidase.
